Scientific Council is founded in 1964. It includes 63 members. Its aim is to coordinate the main scientific activity dealing with hydrobiology and ichthyology in 20 Russian Scientific Institutes. The Council coordinates the scientific researches within the following directions:

• studies of structure-functional organization of aquatic ecosystems and communities;
• studies of ecology of aquatic organisms and their populations; dynamics abundance of hydrobionts;
• research of hydrobionts behavior;
• analysis of anthropogenic factors influencing organisms, populations, and hydrobionts communities;
• development of theory and methods of cultivation of aquatic species;
• development of methods of monitoring and predictions of ecosystems state and their conservation;
• computer-based information resources in hydrobioilogical and ichthyological researches.

Besides the Council organizes annually scientific meetings and conferences on the aquatic problems.
