Summary
Inappropriate land use leads to inefficient exploitation of natural resources, destruction of the land resource, poverty and other social problems. The land is the ultimate source of wealth and the foundation on which many civilizations are constructed. Society must ensure that land is not degraded and that it is used according to its capacity to satisfy human needs for present and future generations while also maintaining the earth's ecosystems. Part of the solution to the land-use problem is land evaluation in support of rational land-use planning and appropriate and sustainable use of natural and human resources.
Land evaluation is the process of predicting the use potential of land on the basis of its attributes. A variety of analytical models can be used in these predictions, ranging from qualitative to quantitative, functional to mechanistic, and specific to general.
Thus, land evaluation is a tool for strategic land-use planning. It predicts land performance, both in terms of the expected benefits from and constraints to productive land use, as well as the expected environmental degradation due to these uses.
Computers have been applied to land evaluation at different levels of detail. Land evaluation by map analysis techniques may be accomplished with any geographical information system (GIS). Infact according to a technical point of view, GIS (Geographical Information Systems) are the best tools to support land suitability evaluatin and RS - Remote Sensing are a precious font of information.
Land evaluation and ecological analysis, to calculate the fragmentation, to individuate the connectivity of the ecosystems (ecological networks) and to individuate the better land use, it is implicate, in fact, the management of a big massive structure territorial precise data as for location and adjourned.
