GROUP OF ECOINFORMATIONAL SYSTEMS AND SPACE MONITORING
Headed by Professor G.l.Belchansky, Dr. Sc. (techn.)
MAIN GOALS AND TASKS
The principal scientific goals include:
- Researching and developing data processing and classification methodology for tundra and arctic marine mammals and birds habitats studying using passive and active satellite remote sensing data and satellite telemetry data, developing the sea ice distribution/ice type temporal databases for marine mammals ecology studies (relationships between distribution and sea ice characteristics, migratory routes, adaptation to environmental changes, navigation ability, effects of sea ice concentration and types on behavior, abundance, and distribution etc.), investigation of efficiency of satellite data for documenting arctic marine mammals sea-ice habitats and documenting variations in sea ice extent, surface characteristics and concentration. The main purpose of this work is ecological study of large mammals in arctic environments and their relationship with climatic fluctuation.
- Researching and developing data processing system for Nature Reserve for monitoring information, biodiversity and global change assessment methodologies.
