A comparison of various biomarkers used in ecotoxicological studies in South Africa
Various biomarkers of toxicity have been used for the soil environment and also in marine ecotoxicological research in South Africa. These biomarkers encompass molecular and cellular tests that can be executed easily in any laboratory. They include the Neutral Red Retention assay (NRRT), the Neutral Red Spectrophtometric assay (NRR), the MTT assay, AChE inhibition test and the Comet assay. Laboratory exposures, microcosm studies as well as field sampling were used. Test were done for the effects of various heavy metals as well as organophosphate pesticides sprayed in the vineyards and orchards in the Western Cape area. The techniques will be discussed using results from our own research.
