The main directions of research (according to basic directions "Biological diversity" (6.3.) and "Ecology of organisms and communities" (6.2.)) are as follows:

perfection of the fundamental scientific principles of biodiversity conservation - optimization and development of the system of protection, reproduction and non-exhaustive complex use of terrestrial ecosystems and resources of animal and plant world taking into account ecological, climatic, geographic, economical and social factors;

development of the strategies and plans of actions in the field of biodiversity conservation, including separate species, populations and ecosystems;

improvement of the system of the methods for evaluation of the state and monitoring (including satellite remote sensing) of the objects of plant and animal world, including the species registered in the Red Data Books of various rank, and also of their environment;

theoretical and applied questions of planning, organization and functioning of specially protected territories of various status, the territories of traditional nature management, hunting grounds, the grounds with other functions of biological resources use;

scientific supply for fulfillment of Russian obligations under International agreements in the filed of biodiversity.
